History of Triumph® Motorcycles

For well over a century, one of the world’s leading motorcycle manufacturers has been Triumph. This British-based motorcycle titan has been behind some of the most popular motorcycle models, and their bikes have been used during wars and on the racing circuit. Keep reading to learn more about Triumph motorcycles and their storied history.

In the Beginning

Coventry, England, is the home of the Triumph Cycle Co. Ltd., which is the first incarnation of the maker of these iconic motorcycles. The first Triumph motorcycle rolled off assembly lines in 1902, by installing a small single-cylinder engine to a bicycle-style frame. Bicycles and motorcycles were developed within a few years of each other, with motorcycles building off the initial two-wheeled transport design by adding gas power.

In 1905, Triumph began making their own motorcycle engines, which soon resulted in their entrance into the burgeoning world of competitive motorcycle racing. With a more powerful 450cc engine, Triumph motorcycles were ready to take home the blue ribbon at the racetrack. By 1910, only a scant eight years after their first development, Triumph was producing an impressive 1,000 motorcycles per year!

World Wars I & II

The Allied forces relied heavily upon Triumph motorcycles as military transportation during the hard years of World War I. Unfortunately, when World War II came around, the Coventry factory was destroyed by enemy bombing. In 1942, a new factory in Meriden, England, allowed Triumph to resume producing wartime bikes, with 40,000 Triumph motorcycles created specifically for Allied use by the end of the war in 1945.

Following the war, Triumph formed its American-based Triumph Corporation in 1950, which allowed them to ramp up stateside production of their classic motorcycles. The United States soon became their biggest market in the 1950s. The veterans of World War II who had ridden Triumph bikes on the battlefields of Europe were more than happy to purchase bikes for riding on the newly built highways back home.

During the next few decades, Triumph motorcycles were also heavily used on the racing circuit. Despite some financial difficulties during the 1980s, Triumph was able to resume production in the 1990s and their motorcycles remain some of the most popular bikes on the road.
